Gratitude For God’s Promises

Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 4:18, “So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.”  He tells us eternal things are the important things.  This is where we begin with a gratitude list.  Focus on important things, God and His promises. The bible contains literally thousands of them waiting to be claimed by faith.  Matthew 6:33 tells us, “Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all things will be given unto you.”

God commands us to be thankful for our own protection.  Ingratitude is the very first step AWAY from God.  Dr. James Kennedy wrote, “An ungrateful person is only one step away from getting his or her needs met in illegitimate ways.”  Ingratitude is directly linked to sinfulness causing us to turn our back to God in shame or guilt.  This can be exhausting like quicksand.  The more you try to fix it, the more you sink.  Stressing over things in this life, which is temporary, will not bring happiness, joy or peace that God intended for you.  It simply doesn’t work.  On the contrary, stress and worry is the lack of trust.

Philippians 4:6-7 says, “Do not be anxious for anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.  And the peace of God, which surpasses all understand, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Have you ever colored a picture with a child?  You choose perfect colors.  You painstakingly color inside the lines.  The excited child decides to help and with his crayon makes random, black scribbles on the page, thus destroying your perfect artwork.  It’s downright upsetting!  This is what we do to God’s perfect plan.  We mess it up.  When you choose to get out of His way and surrender your crayons, then He can create His perfect picture.
